Abstract: Multi-resistant bacterial strains currently present the main health problem worldwide. Numerous public health organizations call for the prevention, and control the spread, of antibiotic resistance from any sources. From the literature data, it is well known that agricultural areas are a source of antibiotic resistance because of the use of antibiotics and heavy metals to promote plant and animal growth. Moreover, natural water reservoirs and soil not used for agriculture are also sources of multi-drug resistant bacteria. In recent years bacteria resistant to antibiotics and heavy metals have been isolated from heavy-metal contaminated soils and from metallophytes. Therefore, it seems that heavy metals, an environmental pollutant, may also be a selection factor that promotes the spread of antibiotic resistance. The co-selection phenomenon of resistant genes is most often connected with the lack of bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics and heavy metals. Co-selection occurs when different resistant genes that enable resistance to different stress conditions are located on the same mobile genetic elements, or when the same genes determine resistance to different stress conditions. This article presents the current state of knowledge about the co-selection phenomenon observed in bacteria isolated from nonclinical environments.

Te nowo poznane mechanizmy oddziaływania stwarzają dodatkowe możliwości ich wykorzystania m.in. w integrowanej ochronie roślin.

Abstract: Naturally occurring entomopathogens are important regulatory factors of insect populations. Among them, entomopathogenic fungi play a meaningful role. The invasion of insects by parasitic fungi occurs through penetration of the host integument. Death of the host is a result of tissue destruction, exhaustion of nutrients, and the production of toxins. Many recent studies show that entomopathogenic fungi are not only considered as insect pathogens, but also play additional roles in nature, including endophytism, plant disease antagonism, plant growth promotion, and rhizosphere colonization. These newly understood attributes provide possibilities to use fungi in multiple roles. Such additional roles recently-discovered to be played by entomopathogenic fungi provide opportunities for multiple uses of these fungi in integrated pest management strategies. This article reviews the literature currently available on entomopathogenic fungi. It also addresses the possible mechanisms of protection conferred by endophytic fungal entomopathogens and explores the potential use of these fungi as dual microbial control agents against both insect and pathogen pests.

Abstract: Endophytes are fungi of the genus Neotyphodium, that live in symbiosis with grasses. The effects of this symbiosis can be both negative and positive. The negative effect may be due to alkaloids produced by endophytes, that in higher concentrations are toxic to animals. On the other hand, the effect of symbiosis can be beneficial to plants, because the grass becomes more resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses such as drought, pests or diseases. The most common alkaloid produce by Neotyphodium fungi are ergovaline and lolitrem B.
Current state of knowledge on the settlement of grasses by these fungi in Poland is rather small. These fungi are usually present in the seeds of Festuca ovina, F. pratensis, F. arundinacea and Lolium perenne. Endophytes were found in plants of permanent grasslands. The most often infected plants were from: Festuca pratensis, F. arundinacea, F. rubra, F. ovina and Lolium perenne. Traces of endophyte presence was also found in the ecotypes of Deschampsia caespitosa, F. capillata, F. gigantea, L. multiflorum, Poa pratensis and Phleum pratense. It was observed that fungi from the genus Neotyphodium occurring in the pasture sward can produce alkaloids, but its production is a variable trait, even within a single ecotype. The average ergovaline content in grass from the permanent pasture in some areas exceeded the threshold level above which disease symptoms in animals may occur.

Abstract: Endophytic bacteria colonize tissue of healthy plants. The source of these bacteria are plant seedlings, seeds and soil. The impact of these microorganisms on plants have been tested for biological control of pathogens, induction of systemic resistance, promote growth and development of plants through binding of free nitrogen, increase in minerals uptake and increase plant resistance to unfavorable abiotic factors. The most numerous reported taxa of endophytic bacteria belong to the genues of phyla Proteobacteria (Azospirillum, Enterobacter, Erwinia, Pantoea, Pseudomonas), Bacteroidetes (Flavobacterium) and Firmicutes (Bacillus).
Endophytes show a great potential in plant production. Increasing interest in these microorganisms in plants protection seems to be an essential part of sustainable crop production. Indeed, their use may bring benefits for agriculture, including increased efficiency of mineral fertilizer, reduce agricultural production costs through more efficient use of fertilizers as well as reduced application of synthetic pesticides. Adoption of microbes will also reduce negative impact of crop production on environment. To avoid potential human pathogens in plant protection, microbes have to undergo a comprehensive risk assessment. In the EU, this assessment is based on principles which were originally developed for pesticides. Although the EU directive concerning the registration of microorganisms as Biological Control Agents, has been adapted to better understand the requirements of microorganisms, it is still time consuming and require large financial input. In EU countries, registration of BCAs lasts up to 7 years, which discourages this type of research and keeps safer plant protection products off the market.
