DEZYNFEKCJA PRZECIWWIRUSOWA W OBSZARZE MEDYCZNYM

ANTIVIRAL DISINFECTION IN THE MEDICAL AREA
Agnieszka Trzcińska

Streszczenie: Zakażenia szpitalne (Hospital-Acquired Infections – HAI) stanowią poważny problem zdrowia publicznego. Problem ten dotyka setki milionów ludzi każdego roku i często prowadzi do wielu poważnych komplikacji zdrowotnych.

Abstract: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are a serious public health problem. This problem affects hundreds of millions of people every year, leading to many serious health complications. Disinfection is an important element in the prevention and control of viral infections, which is the basis of sanitation and hygiene processes in medical facilities such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, dental offices, etc. The disinfection is a complex process, the efficacy of which is influenced by many factors. The disinfectant, apart from the fact that it requires competent and proper use, also has to meet certain criteria, including the wide range of biocidal activity confirmed by well-known and well-designed research methods.

Abstract: Developments in modern medicine, introduction of new surgical techniques and invasive methods of diagnosis and treatment, resulted in an increased risk of medical personnel’s contact with materials contaminated by pathogens. Surgical instruments pose a high risk of infection transmission, as due to contact with tissue they must be sterile. Reprocessing is the technological line, comprising a series of steps that must be done to contaminated instruments during the procedure which makes them suitable for reuse. The main stages of reprocessing are: cleansing, disinfecting, rinsing, drying, control of functionality, maintainance, packaging, sterilisation and verification of medical device quality and performance of functional tests, which allow the user to provide a sterile product, while maintaining its full functional capacity. The paper presents the steps of preparation of medical instruments for use, from transportation from the user, through the cleansing, disinfection and control. The sterilisation process and its control are discussed in part two of the article.

1. Introduction. 2. The classification of medical instruments. 3. Compatibility and material tolerance. 4. Centralisation of decontamination processes. 5. Transportation of instruments from the user. 6. Cleansing and disinfection. 7. Drying. 8. Summary

Abstract: Unquestionable bactericidal activity of ozone has been known for over 100 years. The possibility of artificial production of ozone in the specially constructed generators allows for studying the activity of ozone against microorganisms. Medical application (ozonotherapy) of ozone (gas naturally occurring in nature) is nothing more than one more method of physical therapy. In Poland, ozonotherapy was applied for the first time by professor Hubert Antoszewski, who working in Silesia and being a strong follower of this method, set up the Polish Society of Ozonotherapy (PTOT) located in Katowice. Ozonotherapy is still, despite the appearing increase in the number of major scientific reports about its efficacy, treated as a method of alternative medicine and for this reason it is not refunded by the health systems of many countries. Ozone is toxic to humans and when inhaled, it can cause serious health problems – if its concentration in air exceeds a safe value. Toxicity of ozone depends on its concentration, time of exposure and route of administration. Despite its toxicity, bactericidal, fungicidal and virucidal activity, ozone is used in ozonotherapy in many medical fields, e.g. surgery, dermatology, laryngology, ophthalmology, gynecology and dentistry. Additionally, ozone is also applied for disinfection of water and air, and in food industry. The Department of Antibiotics and Microbiology at the National Medicines Institute in Warsaw, has performed studies concerning antimicrobial activity of ozonized water and oxygen-ozone gas mixture, according to the methodology developed in the relevant European Standards (EN). These studies were intended for evaluation of bactericidal and fungicidal activity of disinfectants and antiseptics. The present state of knowledge, taking into consideration the research related to ozone antimicrobial activity, allows us to treat ozonotherapy as an evidence-based method (EBM). Other applications of this physical method are still disputable despite many studies.
